I thought it was a fairly simple request. This year the herbs in the garden have been quite wonderful, and since some of them will die right back soon when the frosts begin, I thought it would be a good idea to pick some bunches for drying. Mr Penry gallantly offered to go and get one for me, so I tried to explain what it was I wanted…
I need to hang it up in an airy place, so that the herbs will dry out evenly.
I would really like one made of metal.
It must not be too big.
Something small, attractive and well…. fit for the purpose.
Does this suggest a typical herb dryer to you? Clearly Mr Penry had other ideas. A few hours later, back he comes, carrying a parcel, smiling happily.
‘I’ve had a bargain,’ he announced.
My heart started the sink just a little bit. The problem with Mr Penry’s bargains is that they rarely bear much relationship with the original item.
‘Is it a herb dryer?’
He looked a little hurt at that. ‘Of course it is. It’s exactly what you said you wanted. You can hang it up, the herbs can hang from it so they dry evenly, it’s made of metal and it’s nice and small.’
I kid you not.
A folding anchor….
well, at least now my herbs will never be lost at sea

Thats made me chuckle, at least he tried x
He did indeed. He did his best….
Hehehe well done MrPenry 🙂
Btw I saw a Danish woman on TV make one. All you need is an old cupboard or chest of drawers but instead of proper shelves you have mesh ones and that the bottom she’d inserted a small fan heater .
🙂

Oh here’s how to build a solar power ERB drier :))

Get to it Mr Penry 🙂

Oh Mira, you reallyl don’t want to know what he might do with that…. the first herb drier in space, anyone? 😉
I was thinking of hanging mine near the de-humidifier which would probably work in much the same way wouldn’t it?
I think it would .
Don’t hang the herbs in direct sunlight as that saps them of their fragrance. Apparently it is best to harvest herbs in the morning too.
Making herb salt and using basil and rosemary or estragon in olive oil to add flavour is also a good idea.
Ah bless. I tie my herbs with twine and just hang up in a dry dark place. That anchor would be good for onions and garlic though!
A folding anchor, haha!
Yes I think it would be briliant for onions and garlic… where he finds these things I shudder to think. It reminds me of the time be bought me a ball and chain for my birthday 😉
Anchors away!!!! :)) :))
Absolutely, la spice – maybe he wanted to pin the herbs down in a storm or something… 😉
This sounds like my hubby … only he would make it out of scrap wood or metal he has been hoarding for the past 50 years in case he might need it to build something!
Actually Mr Penry is like that too, only this time I’d told him I didn’t want him to make it (can you imagine a herb drier made from 6 x 6 timber??) And I got an anchor instead :))
Aww bless him 10 out of 10 for Mr Penry’s good idea. Really did make me laugh.
Life is never dull when Mr Penry is around :))
There’s no holes in it Tylluan. It will hang up somewhere. I reckon your tornado dryer might come in handy for another purpose.
:)) he got it right apart from one thing,,you said ‘attractive’ :)) Microwaving is great for drying out herbs you have to do it on a very low setting and very slowly though, I tie mine with string and just hang on a hook in the kitchen or the garage.
BOL.
Good luck with drying your herbs, each time I have tried they end up just going mouldy. I think the climate here is too damp.

0h well he tried bless him.lol. I just tie mine in bunches and hang them up in the kitchen.xx
Ah, bless him. It’s the thought that counts. It’s a very nice shiny gadget though.
Oh, that’s soooooo clever, I want one of those :)):):) x
