Isn’t it lovely when somebody does you a really good turn? Something they don’t have to do, but they do it all the same. They really go the extra mile. Now I like a rant as well as anyone else, but I also like to give credit where it’s due. And credit is definitely due to the Hay Book Company, a small bookshop near the Buttermarket in High Town, Hay on Wye.
Now as regular readers of this blog will know, the little town of Hay on Wye is one of my favourite places, partly because it is full of book shops. But I’ve not been there in a while now, partly because problems with my eyesight have made life rather difficult for me. But last weekend, armed with a pocket magnifying glass, Mr Penry took me there for a day out – just him and me.
I had a great time, and I bought a couple of books I think will be very interesting reads. However, when I got home and unpacked my things I discovered that one of my purchases – from the Hay Book Company – was missing. We searched high and low for it, thinking maybe it had fallen on in the car but no – I had left it in the shop. In Hay on Wye.
The following morning, Sunday, I phoned them up to explain what had happened and they promised to look for it. Later they rang to say they hadn’t found it yet, but would keep looking. And then, first thing on Monday morning, they rang to say they had found it! Hurrah!
But this is what makes this bookshop so special – they then posted the book to me which I thought was very kind and thoughtful. It wasn’t even an expensive book, and yet they sent it first class!
It’s a brilliant little shop, absolutely chock-full of books on every subject imaginable. And if my experiences are anything to go by, they really care about their customers too!
